Program Safety Guidelines - Hiking


General Information

  • Each member is responsible for their own safety at all times while engaging in activities related to hiking.

  • Participants should have the appropriate stamina necessary for the distance of the hike.

  • TSM will provide a hike leader and sweep for each hike.

Equipment

Each person should provide

  • Appropriate footwear for hiking

  • Layers as appropriate for the weather and the distance

  • Hydration, nutrition, sun/weather protection for the outing

  • Hiking poles if desired

  • Bring your personal health care items such as an epi pen and inhaler.

  • Let the leader know if you have any pertinent health concerns.

Safety Rules

  • Stay aware of the terrain and pay attention to where you are placing your feet.

  • The group leaders will set the pace. Each hiker is responsible for letting the leaders know if the pace needs to be adjusted.

Hike Route

Be informed about the route proposed for the outing. When possible, review the hike route and assess your readiness and ability for the route distance and terrain. Route distances and options will be described in activity descriptions.

Hike Organizers Information

  1. If group is large, plan for a lead and a sweep

  2. Leader and sweep take photo of the emergency waiver list

  3. Lead and sweeps share their phone numbers with each other

  4. Plan stops with everyone catching up, checking in, and taking nutrition/water

  5. Share names in pre-hike circle up

  6. Wrap-up circle
