Hike and Geocache Adventure

Hike and Geocache Adventure

Join TSM for a hike and geocache adventure. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting activity that uses GPS-enabled devices (your phone). In geocaching, participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the "geocache," (usually a hidden container of various sizes) at that location. It’s a fun addition to any hike. For more information about geocaching, download the free app at geocaching.com. You’ll need the app to find the cache.

The 2 mile hike includes woodland and prairie with large views on top of Blue Mounds. The trail is leaf covered with some tree roots and slight elevation change. Hiking distance can be added for those who wish to add loops. This location will qualify as part of our TSM Dane County Parks Challenge too!

Meet near the Park Main Entrance off Highway F and park in the lot near the entrance and by the playground. Dress for the weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes or boots. Bring a water bottle, walking poles, and binoculars if you’d like. Snacks provided.

RSVP by April 17 to Irene at ireneg@teamsurvivormadison.org or text 608-575-4074

As trees begin leafing out, spring wildflowers also make their appearance. We’ll join a 1:00pm tour to learn about wildflowers in the Arboretum’s Native Plant Garden, led by Curator Susan Carpenter. Afterward, we’ll take a walk/hike on our own, either through the Longenecker Horticultural Gardens or through the woods, depending on what’s in bloom.

Hike - Pheasant Branch Conservancy

Hike - Pheasant Branch Conservancy

Let’s kick off TSM’s participation in the Dane County Parks Challenge with a 3.3-mile circular hike around the Pheasant Branch Conservancy loop!

The trail is a mix of pavement, crushed gravel, and boardwalks and offers a scenic, mostly flat route through beautiful marshland, prairies, and forests. We’ll keep our eyes open for wildlife, including a pair of eagles that has nested in the park for many years. If we’d like, we can take a short detour down to the bubbling Frederick Springs, the headwaters of Pheasant Branch Creek.

Set your GPS for Orchid Heights Park, Middleton, WI. The drinking fountain and restrooms probably won’t be open for the season, but there’s a Porta-potty at the trailhead.

Dress for the weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes or boots that can get wet and/or muddy. March can be mud season! Bring a water bottle, walking poles, and binoculars if you’d like.

RSVP to Judy by Friday, March 6, at jrweidman2@gmail.com
